- Born April 25, 1917 to Tempie and William Fitzgerald in New Port News, Virginia.
- moved to Yonkers during the Great Migration between 1921-23
- her father left the family and she eventually gain a step-father
- Poor living conditions, but the community had a blending of cultures.
- She lived amongst the middle class ideals, and the stereotypes of a black woman. She was raise to act better.
- She loved to dance, and at a young age she wanted to be somebody. Dancing was a gateway to a better life.
- She went through the great depression
- Her first public performance was at the age of 15.
- she skipped school a lot to make money and to dance.
- she was arrested for truancy and was sentenced to 5 yrs at the New York State Training school for girls. (year? I want to say 1933)
- she was labeled ungovernable, and not willing to obey.
- She did not like the school, but she did love the music program and gain a bit a training there.
- Spring 1934 she was released, possibly to keep entertaining for money.
- October 10, 1934 Tempie dies.
